2011 Family Camp Pocket Patch

Family Camp also issued a patch for the the 2011 season. It is undated and uses a design familiar to GNYC Camp Patch collectors. The design was used for Henry Kaufmann Scout Camp on at least 2 of its patches.

Another undated neckerchief from Sanita Hills Scout Camp. A light green neckerchief with a yellow, green and black design. I have also seen a neckerchief slide with the same design.

The Boys Scouts of Greater New York Councils took over Sanita Hills Camp, a 1100-acre resort for employees of the New York City Department of Sanitation in May 1956. The camp was used for many years including a stint as a separate summer camp during the late 1960′s and early 1970′s. It was later sold in the mid – late 1980′s.

This is one of several undated neckerchiefs issued by GNYC. This one is on a turquoise cloth with black lettering.

I believe that this neckerchief is from circa 1960, can anyone provide a more exact date?

At Scouts’ Pouch Camp, summer will be in session despite black cloud.

That’s the headline from a recent article in the Staten Island Advance on the ongoing story on Camp Pouch.

The cash-strapped Greater New York Councils of the Boy Scouts of America continues to seek a solution for the camp, after announcing in 2009 it might have to sell the property absent a $30 million conservation easement from the city.

Although a spokesman for the Boy Scouts could not give a specific time line yesterday on the fate the camp, he confirmed that the organization is actively pursuing its options, including selling off a portion of the camp or looking to public and private sources to help make the easement a reality.

Hoyt Farm Scout Camp Neckerchief

According to the New York Times, “The former Edwin C. Hoyt Farm became today the newest Scout camp of the Greater New York Council of Boy Scouts of America–but forty acres of the 125 will be for conservation study only.”on May 4, 1957. Hoyt Farm was located in Commack, New York and was only used as a GNYC Camp for a relatively short period of time and was closed before 1970. Can anyone confirm the exact years of operation?

I have not seen a lot of memorabilia from this camp. One item however is the neckerchief pictured below.

State unlikely to cough up money to buy Pouch Camp

That was the title of the most recent article on Camp Pouch in the Staten Island Advance.

Don’t expect the state to be Pouch Camp’s white knight.Tucked inside Gov. David Paterson’s preliminary budget released last week was a proposal to place an indefinite moratorium on state land buys.

But the potential loss of the state as a savior for the 120-acre Sea View campgrounds, considered the heart of the borough’s Scouting community, didn’t come as a surprise.

“We always knew we would face this obstacle,” said Assemblyman Michael Cusick (D-Mid-Island), who is among a number of elected officials attempting to keep Pouch Camp off the market.

There was an article in the New York Times this weekend on the status of Camp Pouch.

A Celebrated Scout Camp on Staten Island Is in Jeopardy

The city has also been involved in discussions about rescuing the camp, said Adrian Benepe, the parks commissioner. He pointed out, however, that with agencies required to cut their capital budgets by 30 percent this year, it was highly unlikely that the city would buy the property. Instead, he said, the city might encourage a white knight, like the Trust for Public Land, to do so.
