State unlikely to cough up money to buy Pouch Camp

That was the title of the most recent article on Camp Pouch in the Staten Island Advance.

Don’t expect the state to be Pouch Camp’s white knight.Tucked inside Gov. David Paterson’s preliminary budget released last week was a proposal to place an indefinite moratorium on state land buys.

But the potential loss of the state as a savior for the 120-acre Sea View campgrounds, considered the heart of the borough’s Scouting community, didn’t come as a surprise.

“We always knew we would face this obstacle,” said Assemblyman Michael Cusick (D-Mid-Island), who is among a number of elected officials attempting to keep Pouch Camp off the market.

There was an article in the New York Times this weekend on the status of Camp Pouch.

A Celebrated Scout Camp on Staten Island Is in Jeopardy

Financial woes may force the sale of Camp Pouch, 140 acres where generations have learned to rough it.

….

The city has also been involved in discussions about rescuing the camp, said Adrian Benepe, the parks commissioner. He pointed out, however, that with agencies required to cut their capital budgets by 30 percent this year, it was highly unlikely that the city would buy the property. Instead, he said, the city might encourage a white knight, like the Trust for Public Land, to do so.

Camp Pouch Update

Planning continue on ways to save Camp Pouch. A recent article in the Staten Island Advance outlines some of the discussions which are underweigh.

Discussions to save Pouch Camp in the Greenbelt are under way and involve surprising potential saviors: A luxury home builder and the Richmond County Country Club; and possibly the New York Container Terminal.

In an attempt to prevent the Greater New York Councils of Boy Scouts from selling off the 120-acre camp to a private developer, the two separate fund-raising possibilities that are emerging would allow other commercial or residential development to take place.

…

“There has been no decision made on this proposal or any other proposal. We were asked to look at it and we are looking it,” Cusick noted. “The goal here is, ultimately, to save Pouch Camp and to keep it as pristine open space…. We have to listen and entertain any proposal that comes across our desk.”

Henry Kaufmann Bicentennial Patch

I recently picked up an oddity from Henry Kaufmann Scout Camp. Issued for the Bicentennial, it appears to be silk-screened on a light piece of canvas, perhaps to be ironed on to a neckerchief.

Alpine Scout Camp Bicentennial Patch

I’ve always like the design of the Alpine Scout Camp Bicentennial Patch, with the American Flag, Eagle and Liberty Bell. I never realized that there were two varieties.

The upper image shows a single flat rolled edge border, the bottom image has a second lighter yellow border appears to be added to the original. Both a cloth backed, the lettering in the double-bordered patch is thicker and the tags are different from the single border variety.

Sanita Hills Compass Jacket Patch

The Boys Scouts of Greater New York Councils took over Sanita Hills Camp, a 1100-acre resort for employees of the New York City Department of Sanitation in May 1956. The camp was used by GNYC for many years including a stint as a separate summer camp during the late 1960′s and early 1970′s. It was later sold in the mid – late 1980′s.

A number of patches, neckerchiefs and slides were issued for this camp. Douglas Chin provides a scan of one of the backpatches issued for the camp.

Spruce Pond Scout Camp

Spruce Pond Scout Camp is located across the road and up the Goat Trail from the recently closed Red Apple Rest in Tuxedo, NY. This was one of the standard jacket patches used for the Camp in the late 1960′s and early 1970′s.

Spruce Pond Half Moon-Shaped Patch

Spruce Pond was located across the road (old Route 17) from the Red Apple Rest. I am aware of 3 patches issued for this camp during its use by GNYC.

The Boy Scouts did not own this land, but leased it from September to June each year from the Palisades Park Commission. It is currently part of Harriman State Park.

First new cabin to be built in William H. Pouch Scout Camp since 1966

In the Scouting in the News Department, a new cabin will be built at Camp Pouch in Staten Island

Staten Island – State Senator Andrew J. Lanza (R-I, Staten Island) announced today that he has secured $200,000 in capital funding for a new state of the art cabin facility to be built at William H. Pouch Scout Camp in Staten Island.

The new cabin will be the first new addition to the Boy Scouts of America’s beautiful camp system in the heart of the Greenbelt, since 1966. In 1966, the Boy Scouts of America built “Four Pines” – a set of four cabins. Today, after numerous fires, only two remain.

“Scouting remains one of those activities in life that is enriching to the mind, body and soul. Here on Staten Island, in Pouch Camp, we are blessed to have perhaps one of the most beautiful scout facilities in the country.”, Senator Lanza said. “Just minutes from the Manhattan skyline, young people can escape to a pristine, country setting. It has been more than 40 years since cabins have been built at Pouch Camp and I am happy to work with the Boy Scouts of America and to have been able to secure this funding to bring brand new cabins to Staten Island.”, Lanza continued.

The new cabin will house approximately 30 young people, according to the Boy Scouts of America, and include a kitchen and bathroom facility. It will be located east of the Camp-O-Ree field.
